Downloads ilegais | Como é que "eles" sabem?

Como é que a Motion Picture Association of America sabe que determinada pessoa infringiu a lei e disponibilizou um filme protegido por direitos de autor na Internet? O processo envolve firmas de segurança que monitorizam redes de trocas ficheiros e reportam qualquer actividade ilegal. Se um utilizador disponibilizar um ficheiro ilegal, essas firmas vão identificar o seu endereço de IP e inicialmente é apenas este que é levado a tribunal. Aí, a acusação solicita ao juiz que apresente um requerimento junto do ISP (Internet Service Provider) para obter o nome e a morada associada ao endereço de IP.

A wealthy software executive named Shawn Hogan has vowed to fight a copyright-infringement lawsuit in court rather than settle with the Motion Picture Association of America. According to the MPAA, Hogan made the film Meet the Fockers available for download through a BitTorrent file-sharing network. Hogan denies that he did anything of the sort. How do investigators find their targets?
