Óscares | "Dreamgirls" é favorito mas não concorre como melhor filme

Apesar de reunir oito nomeações, "Dreamgirls" não foi um dos eleitos para a categoria de melhor filme. Aí, os escolhidos foram "Babel" (7 nomeações), "The Departed" (5), "Letters from Iwo Jima" (4), "Little Miss Sunshine (4) e "The Queen" (6).

Oscar took a world view in nominations for the 79th annual Academy Awards, with foreign-language work strongly represented in a roster that was filled with surprises. No. 1 on that list of shocks is "Dreamgirls," which was the nom leader with eight bids, but failed to make it into the best picture race.

First, a disclaimer: No critic who gave birth to her first child last Feb. 14 can reasonably lay claim to an exhaustive knowledge of the movie year that followed. There were at least four months there during which the only movies I managed to catch were the fatigue-induced hallucinations on the inside of my own eyelids. But in mid-June, I started as Slate's film critic, a job that, along with the aforementioned child, has made 2006 my personal best year ever. It was a pretty terrific year for movies, too, despite Fur and Apocalypto and My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

Os filmes do ano segundo o AFI

O American Film Institute anunciou quais foram, na opinião da influente instituição, os filmes de 2006: "Babel," "Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan," "The Devil Wears Prada," "Dreamgirls," "Half Nelson," "Happy Feet," "Inside Man," "Letters From Iwo Jima," "Little Miss Sunshine" e "United 93."

Comedy was well represented on the American Film Institute's seventh annual top 10 list, a sharp contrast to last year's emphasis on high-minded and downbeat films.
Among the feel-good items were "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," "The Devil Wears Prada," musical "Dreamgirls," toon "Happy Feet" and "Little Miss Sunshine."
