Óscares | "There Will Be Blood" e "No Country for Old Men" na linha da frente

Com oito nomeações cada (incluindo para a categoria Melhor Filme), "There Will Be Blood" e "No Country for Old Men" lideram a lista dos candidatos aos Óscares deste ano. Mas o mais importante parece ser mesmo a festa e a única coisa que a organização garante é que essa vai de facto acontecer a 24 de Fevereiro, no Kodak Theater.

Paramount Vantage and Miramax scored a double whammy as their "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" led nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards with eight bids, including best picture.
Also nominated for the top prize are Focus Features’ “Atonement,” Fox Searchlight’s “Juno,” and Warner Bros.’ “Michael Clayton.” The film with the most noms has ended up winning the best picture prize in 16 of the last 20 years. However, for the last three years, the nom leader did not win: “The Aviator,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “Dreamgirls” led, but the best-pic Oscar went to, respectively, “Million Dollar Baby,” “Crash” and “The Departed.”

Os globos sem ouro

A edição deste anos dos Globos de Ouro foi reduzida a uma espécie de conferência de imprensa. Devido à greve dos argumentistas, as estrelas estiveram ausentes na noite de antevisão dos Óscares. Quanto aos prémios, não houve grandes vencedores, mas "Sweeney Todd", de Tim Burton, arrecadou o Globo para melhor musical ou comédia e "Atonement", de Joe Wright, venceu na categoria de melhor drama.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Amid the barest hint of star power at a Golden Globes ceremony derailed by striking screenwriters, “Atonement” captured the award for best drama and “Sweeney Todd” won for best musical or comedy on Sunday.
Daniel Day-Lewis won for best actor in a drama, giving a lift to “There Will Be Blood,” and Javier Bardem took best supporting actor for “No Country for Old Men.” While Johnny Depp walked off with a best-actor award for his lead role in “Sweeney Todd,” the awards were spread so evenly that it was difficult to assign anyone the role of overall winner.

There's no spontaneous singing or frogs falling from the sky in Anderson's "There Will Be Blood." But this intimate epic -- about greed and false prophets set in turn-of-the-century California and based on Upton Sinclair's 1927 tome "Oil!" -- comes as just as much of a surprise from the 37-year-old iconoclast. Unlike Anderson's layered, multicharacter studies "Hard Eight," "Boogie Nights" and three-time Oscar nominee "Magnolia," "Blood" focuses more singularly on Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), a black-gold maverick who devotes his life to beating his competitors -- and small-town preacher (Paul Dano), no matter the cost to his son or his sanity. If there are any similarities to Anderson's last film, the eccentric romantic comedy "Punch Drunk Love," they exist only in the angry outbursts and bold artistic choices that have continually marked the helmer's career.

GENESIS: After "Punch Drunk Love," Anderson says he felt "the world was full of possibilities," but he can't pinpoint the exact birth of the project. "It's like you've written enough and there's enough good scenes in a row that there's a point of no return."
VISION: "I didn't want to be tied down with storyboards," he explains. "We were working from research material of what a derrick and the town looked like, and we never made allowances for what a camera might do. It's one of the nice things about shooting in a desert location: You're just struggling for survival, because it's hot, it's fucking dusty, and you don't have time to think."

CHALLENGES: "I wouldn't say there was anything tremendously difficult that we didn't relish, that wasn't fun," he says. "But I'm Pollyannaish about that. I always look back and think, 'That was fun,' and everyone else is like, 'That was a fucking nightmare.' "
MAGIC: The scene in which an oil derrick goes ablaze, "because you're lighting something on fire and there's thousands of gallons of diesel fuel and there's going to be a match lit, but as much you prepare yourself, you can't imagine how hot it was and how beautiful it was."

Óscares | "Dreamgirls" é favorito mas não concorre como melhor filme

Apesar de reunir oito nomeações, "Dreamgirls" não foi um dos eleitos para a categoria de melhor filme. Aí, os escolhidos foram "Babel" (7 nomeações), "The Departed" (5), "Letters from Iwo Jima" (4), "Little Miss Sunshine (4) e "The Queen" (6).

Oscar took a world view in nominations for the 79th annual Academy Awards, with foreign-language work strongly represented in a roster that was filled with surprises. No. 1 on that list of shocks is "Dreamgirls," which was the nom leader with eight bids, but failed to make it into the best picture race.
